You can visit Skills North West at any time. With so much to see we offer special staggered slots for big groups so everyone gets a chance to try the interactive features. We recommend visiting the event for approximately two hours.
What Happening

The event is the place to try out your future and get hands on with the exciting demonstrations being full of interactive features. This year you can have a go at different activities from a range of careers.
Make It
The Manufacturing Institute is showcasing the Make It stand featuring a wide range of employers offering many exciting and rewarding career opportunities from aerospace, automotive, chemicals, advanced flexible materials and food and drink manufacturing. You can take away a range of goodies – from key rings to badges to drawstring bags and even aeroplanes – you just have to make them first!
Explore the future with U-Explore
Explore a challenge created from a real-life issue faced by BAE systems’ Logistics team. Design and manufacture a container that can transport the canopy of a fighter jet, worth £250,000!! You’ll need to design and make a prototype and protect a hard boiled egg from a one metre drop using straws, cards, glue and stjcky tape. Working in teams and against the clock, you’ve only got 15 minutes before you test your creation. The winning team will win a year’s subscription to U-Explore.
Train to gain
Get along to the North West Provider Network stand who will be showcasing some of the best local training around with providers including Boltonwise, Alliance Learning, Sports Global, Powerwave, Bolton Community College, Nacro and many more.
Force for the future
Feel the force with the Army who offer over 140 different careers. At Skills North West you’ll be able to try some of the skills you’ll need when you climb to new heights with their climbing wall, try operations and logistics sending radio messages, try intelligence training with computer games, try 3d photographic equipment, handle deactivated weapons and engrave your own dog tag souvenir. The activities will be manned by solders from the North West who will talk about their own experiences and offer advice and answer your careers questions from joining the bomb disposal team to participating in musical and ceremonial duties.
Taste challenge
Go along to HIT Training and test your taste buds by guessing the fruit. Get it right and you’ll have a chance to try a few more after you’ve dunked them in the chocolate fountain! HIT Training is a national apprenticeship provider for the catering and hospitality industry and at Skills North West you’ll taste the benefits!
Counting the ways to success
Make your way to accountancy training provider, Kaplan’s stand and you’ll have a chance to take part in their interactive apprenticeship quiz; if you’re a winner you will receive a £5 music voucher. You’ll also have a chance to enter a free prize draw to win a brand new laptop.
Become a millionaire
Employing around 24,000 people with a wide variety of backgrounds, experience and skills Manchester City Council is the largest employer in Manchester. There will be an interactive ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ game that poses questions about careers and the benefits within the council.
Voluntary options
If you’re not sure what you want to do and think you might end up doing nothing visit the Rathbone stand, they work with young people all across the UK. On their stand they’ll have a motor vehicle electric circuit board, a Wii and interactive computer quiz. So find out what Rathbone can do for you.
Be hospitable
VT Group will be on had offering a range of apprenticeship options. You can try your hand at fruit carving, mocktail mixing and biscuit decorating before you burn off the calories with a gym class and exercise routine. You can chat about the qualifications, training and other opportunities and even have a chance to win a MP3 player.
Construct your career
Visit the ECITB stand and find out about engineering construction careers. You’ll have a chance to build an oil rig and find out about the skills and talents you will need for some of the different career opportunities available, including apprenticeships and other routes into engineering construction.
Light up your future
Visit JTL, who are leading training provider for building service engineering, and you’ll be able to get connected with a lighting circuit patch board, or you can reassemble a float valve. You can then navigate through their interactive game to see where you’ll be in four years time if you follow an apprenticeship. The sat-nav game will give you a chance to try an aptitude test and find out what local colleges offer the courses you want.
Healthy start
Where do all your organs fit in your body? Can you put them in the right place?
University of Southampton will be bringing a torso with removable organs so you can do a human jigsaw.

Ready, Steady & Cook
Presented by Dunbia
Two members of the audience will get the chance to see if they have what it takes to be the next Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsey when Dunbia takes to the stage to tempt you with their culinary delights. Will the audience vote for the green tomatoes or red peppers to win?
Fashion and Hair Extravaganza
Presented by Michaeljohn Training School
Young hairdressing stars of the future from Michaeljohn Training School will be demonstrating new fashion trends for 2010 inspired by Chinese New Year, the circus and future looks.
Models will strut their stuff showing off the latest looks created by Michaeljohn learners in professional dance routines led by Radka Berkopova.
Father and daughter team, Rob and Sophie Gibson will be keeping it in the family with creative hair from Pure Essence, Cheadle Hulme, Stockport.
Performing Art, Dance and Sport Skills
Presented by Bolton Community College
Students from the Performing Arts and Sports faculties will be showcasing their skills and talents on the Performance Stage at Skills North West – performances not to be missed!
Advice and Guidance
Visitors were able to meet impartial experts, ready to help answer questions on enterprise, starting a business, writing a CV, or just how to find out about the career options availalble.
