Make tomorrow's technology solutions 2010-02-05 Teenagers invited to make tomorrow's technology solutions Teenagers will test wind turbines, engineer robotics, create replica bus models and mould ‘fantastic plastics’ as they find out more about the top jobs of the future.It’s all happening at Skills North West on 9, 10 & 11 February at the Bolton Arena.
These great interactive features will be found on the Make It in Manufacturing stand as part of a campaign led by the Manchester-based Manufacturing Institute and its industry partners to encourage the next generation of talent to consider careers in industry.
The Make It team is taking the largest stand at the show to give young visitors a chance to have a go at hands-on activities and meet some of the UK’s top technology businesses.
Said Nicola Eagleton-Crowther: “The government predicts that more than one million people will work in the low carbon economy by 2015 and that the top jobs of the future will be in advanced manufacturing and engineering.
“We want to show teenagers the exciting reality of working in industry and prove that their perceptions of people standing on production lines sticking cherries on bakewells, and of dark satanic mills, are about 30 years out of date.”
Many of the North West’s leading employers will be running interactive activities on the stand, including: Aircelle; BAE Systems; Chemicals Northwest; Cogent; Conquest International; Dunbia; Engineering Manufacturing Solutions; Envirolink; Jaguar Land Rover; Junction K ; Kinetic; MBDA; McBride; Northwest Aerospace Alliance; Northwest Automotive Alliance; Oaktec; Optare, and Unison Engine Components.
Youngsters can play the Tycoon Game, test their knowledge in the Who Wants to be a Millionaire challenge and compete to win a Nintendo Wii.
They can have a go at: designing, building and testing un-manned aircraft; programming and racing Lego Mindstorm vehicles; soldering electronic badges, making metal aircraft, and mastering the water maze. They will also be able to see Oaktek’s low carbon, hybrid rally car, made in Lancaster.
Skills North West www.skillsnw.co.uk is the region’s largest interactive skills and careers fair for 14-19 year-olds and will bring together regional skills sectors, businesses, education establishments and training providers with approximately 15,000 young people in a bid to inspire young people in their career choices.
